Why was it such a seminal book? (As is still is today).
It’s because, before that time, The Soviet Union of Socialist Republics seemed, at least to Leftists, Liberals, and Progressives, to be the Wave of the Future.
The activities of the Left in America were directed by Soviet Communists. Americans were merely figureheads.
The Soviets burrowed deep into the infrastructure of American life:
Education - particularly in universities.
Religion - the activities of the Peace Movement were shaped by Soviet-led training.
The Media - the slant of virtually ALL major publications and on-screen news is Left - HARD Left. Only in the online content that the consumers pay for is there anything like a balance - and the Left is doing their best to deplatform that media’s ability to offer alternative viewpoints.
Politics - despite what you may have been told by apologists of the Left, the people named by the government were, almost without exception, guilty of being Communists - and liars.
If you doubt that, read:
One online source of more information is at Gariwo.net, from which the map below showing the locations of all the internal camps of the Gulag was taken. If you have the stomach, read about many OTHER repressive regimes, and what horrors they inflicted upon their people.
For a look at the pre-Gulag horror in the Ukraine (at that time, a part of the Soviet Union), try watching Mr. Jones. Remember, for DENYING that this happened, the New York Times received a Pulitizer Prize. Which, despite a massive campaign to get them to give back, still resides in their offices.
Think of that when you trust the Mainstream, “Reliable” Media.
It makes sense that the powerful will be drawn to Communism since it gives them that much more power. The Gulag Archipelago really spells out how power can be abused. The colleges especially have gone hard left in the last decades, it wasn't true so in my youth. I wrote a short essay on changes one might make in schools to improve things. I don't think you could get these ideas through a school board, but getting some in may get the ball rolling. It might go better in rural schools. You may or may not have seen this:

Thanks
P. S. Feel free to throw out these ideas without mentioning me.
