Look, there are a LOT of books/articles/stories out there that rely HEAVILY on variations on a theme, formulas, and information that will only need minimal updating.
Like most romance novels, those social media “true story” about an outrage at work, in love, or within families, and your basic light re-writing of press releases.
That’s a hell of a lot of content. Some of them compose MOST of the average person’s daily/weekly reading.
Will that affect the rest of us?
Probably not all that much. I seriously doubt that Larry Correia’s Monster Hunter books could be written by AI. We pay extra for the snarky asides, the quirky situations, and the inventiveness of that author.
Same with many others. They have a clear voice, a distinctive POV, and their books contain both surprises and delights.
Writers with an original mind will be irreplaceable. Just like many other workers who bring their intelligence to their work.
Can AI or machinery replace many jobs?
Absolutely. Much of those formerly highly paid jobs on the factory floor have already been turned over to the metal and plastic workers. I would expect that the economics of shipping manufacture to Asia will rapidly diminish over the next few years. Eventually, it will be cheaper to bring in the materials, and build the factories here. One big plus to that is better quality control. Others include the ability to tax the business in OUR country.
And, much of the world will no longer be generating huge profits for their oligarchies. For those countries, it’s pretty much back to the Stone Age.
The ones that will REALLY see the changes hit them are the college graduates. We’ve been sending too many to college for too long; this is likely to be a permanent loss of jobs, money, and prestige/social status.
Sucks to be the ones facing a major disruption to your way of life, doesn’t it? Hey, maybe you could ask all those Rust Belt Troglodytes how THEY handled it. I’m SURE they would LOVE to explain it all to you.
I’m chillin’ this coming year. Just doing what I can to keep the money flowing in, but putting MOST of my efforts into paying off debt and stocking up. I start a CW class this January (that’s morse code to the non-radio community). My goal is to become proficient at it, and use it over the next few years to build a strong local CW community, connect with other places, and make myself useful, should the $hit Actually Hit the Fan.
Hey, I’m too old and slow to participate in long distance walking, too weak for heavy lifting, and best employed in the background, watching, taking notes, and making sure that activity is communicated to those that need it. Which, in a time of government interruption, means being able to buy, borrow, or sell commodities.
I’m like Radar O’Reilly - he made a LOT of stuff happen, working as the communications hub of the M.A.S.H. unit.
The person in charge of Comms doesn’t have to be the most fit. Their strength is their knowledge.
