I’ve been enjoying the quirky take on the world of Freddie deBoer.
Like many NYC writers, he has a love-hate relationship with the city. Loves the atmosphere, the cultural amenities, and the bodegas.
Bodegas are basically small convenience stores, usually run by Puerto Ricans, that also offer hot food (much quicker and cheaper than ordering in).
Why are the bodegas so loved?
My suspicion is that they have the same appeal of 7-11s or Dairy Marts, but with the added plus of NOT HAVING THOSE AWFUL LOWER-CLASS WHITE PEOPLE.
That’s it. Well, and a few less familiar spices.
The NYC Elites really HATE for their servant classes to be the same color as they are. God Forbid that they have to get on speaking terms with them.
It’s what they HATE about Hillbillies, Rednecks, and just regular working folks.
They like for there to be a clear dividing line between THEM and the Servants. So, an easy way to make sure that they aren’t confused with THOSE PEOPLE is to patronize places where the servants have a different complexion, and perhaps a different accent.
Gotta maintain those class distinctions, ya’ know.
Better a red neck than a blue heart.
