I’ve toyed around with the Substack site, off and on, for several years. It’s been relatively easy to use, it’s got potential for the Writing/Blogging crowd, and - what the heck - I like money, too.
So far, I haven’t worked too hard at this. I’ve use the Blogger site pretty much since I started blogging independently. I can’t say that I take it all that seriously, for the most part. I use it to blow off steam about events that my friends/family don’t want to talk about (over the last 10 years, that has covered a lot of ground).
Time to spend on writing is the critical factor. That, and sufficient head-space and quiet to think deeply about my work.
I’ve been enjoying building up my Medicare/ACA business. It’s provided extra money that I can use to stretch out my retirement funds. It’s more intense during AEP and a few other times of the year, but it does require my time to prepare for yearly certifications, licensing renewal, and handling the ongoing client issues.
I’m not sure just how much longer I can continue this pace. It does require a lot of traveling, something that both is fatiguing, and - these days - expensive. I’m going to give it a few more years, then re-evaluate the business. I’d like to have more time to work on my writing, which requires more focus that I feel able to give it now.
