Dad was a classic, born and raised in WV hillbilly (although, when pressed, he would point out that his hometown, New Martinsville, was in the Ohio River Valley (the South side).
He STRONGLY distrusted government, bosses, and the educated classes (those that thought their fancy education brought them automatic right to tell the Little People what they were, and were not, allowed to do).
He was once written up, while serving in WWII in the Army, for trying to start a union. A charge which he was - kinda - guilty of. Fortunately, his commanding officer thought highly of him, so all he lost was a stripe. He would regularly cycle from private to corporal, then back again, as his natural-born orneriness would surface and irritate the line of command.
It wasn’t until he hit his forties that he began tamping down on that tendency to poke the bear. Once he stopped, he progressed in his career, and the guy who started as a janitor ended up classified as an engineer (more correctly, he was an Engineering Tech - you don’t need a 4-year degree to handle that job).
I saw this meme today, and thought of him:
Too many people’s default position is to trust the M#$%^F@#$%^
Don’t.
They have NO reason to deal squarely with you.
Wisdom!
